East Coast Odyssey
From the deep south to Arugam Bay & back
The most ambitious route in the south. Seven days from Matara that sweep east to the world-famous surf town of Arugam Bay, climb into the highlands via Ella and Badulla, and loop back through Udawalawa to the coast. For riders who want to see everything.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Matara → Tangalle → Tissa → Kataragama
120 kmHead east from Matara along the southern coast past Tangalle's protected lagoons to Tissamaharama, then north to Kataragama — a vibrant pilgrimage city sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims alike.
Kataragama → Yala National Park → Buttala
100 kmAn early morning jeep safari in Yala — Sri Lanka's premier wildlife reserve and one of the best places in the world to spot leopards. After the safari, ride north through the scrub jungle to Buttala.
Buttala → Monaragala → Siyabalanduwa → Potuwil → Arugam Bay
150 kmThe long eastward push through dry-zone wilderness. Ride through Monaragala's rocky hills, the remote forests of Siyabalanduwa, and arrive at Potuwil before the final run to Arugam Bay — Sri Lanka's east coast surfing mecca.
Arugam Bay → Panama → Monaragala → Passara
120 kmExplore the lagoon-edged coast south of Arugam Bay via Panama before turning back inland. Ride west through Monaragala and begin the climb towards the hill country, overnighting in Passara.
Passara → Badulla → Demodara → Ella → Wellawaya
80 kmInto the highlands. Visit Badulla — the end-of-line hill country town — and the famous Demodara loop bridge, one of the engineering marvels of the colonial railway era. Descend to the backpacker haven of Ella, then down to Wellawaya.
Wellawaya → Tanamalwila → Udawalawa → Embilipitiya → Middeniya → Weeraketiya → Beliatta
130 kmRoll across the southern plains. Skirt the Udawalawa Reservoir where wild elephants gather at dusk, then thread through the quiet villages of Embilipitiya, Middeniya, and Weeraketiya heading towards the coast.
Beliatta → Dikwella → Dondra → Matara
80 kmThe final stretch along the southern coastline. Stop at Dondra — the southernmost point of Sri Lanka — before riding the last few kilometres back to Matara where the journey began.
