Matara Sinharaja Circuit
Rainforest interior & wild southern shores
The ideal introduction to the Sri Lanka south. Four days from Matara — into the Sinharaja rainforest hills, across the elephant plains of Udawalawa, looping the south coast via Hambanthota and back. Compact, varied, and unforgettable.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Matara → Akuressa → Pitabeddara → Morawaka → Deniyaya
80 kmRide inland from Matara into the spice-rich foothills via Akuressa and Pitabeddara. The road climbs steadily through rubber estates and cinnamon gardens to the town of Deniyaya — gateway to Sinharaja.
Deniyaya → Suriyakanda → Rakwana → Godakawela → Udawalawa → Thanamalwila
130 kmA long and rewarding day. Ride through the Sinharaja buffer zone, up through the Rakwana highlands, and descend to the open plains of Udawalawa. Elephants are frequently spotted roadside. Continue east to Thanamalwila.
Thanamalwila → Tissa → Weerawila → Hambanthota → Ranna
120 kmCross to the southern coast through Tissamaharama — home to the ancient Tissa Wewa tank. Ride west along the dry zone coast past Hambanthota's salt flats, Sooriyawewa, and the remote villages of Ranna.
Ranna → Tangalle → Dikwella → Dondra → Matara
80 kmThe final coastal sweep. Pass through beautiful Tangalle bay, Dikwella's dramatic blowhole, and continue to Dondra — the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka — before the short ride back to Matara.
