Weligama Highland Explorer

Head east along the southern coast — past Matara's Dutch ramparts and the long golden arc of Tangalle beach — to the quiet fishing village of Ranna as the sun drops into the sea.

Continue east through the dry coastal zone, past the salt pans of Hambanthota and the bird-rich wetlands of Weerawila. Arrive at Kataragama — one of Sri Lanka's most sacred pilgrimage sites.

The big climb. Ride north through Wellawaya and ascend into the highlands via Ella. Stop at the famous Nine Arches Bridge, then wind through tea estates past Hakgala Botanical Garden to misty Nuwara Eliya.

Cross the roof of Sri Lanka. Ride through Horton Plains National Park — a windswept plateau at 2,100 m — then descend dramatically via Kalupahana and Belihuloya to the rubber country of Balangoda.

Drop to the lowlands and skirt Udawalawa Reservoir before rolling south through the quiet villages of Embilipitiya, Middeniya, and Weeraketiya towards the coast.

The final coastal leg home. Rejoin the southern coastline at Beliatta, pass Dikwella's famous blowhole and Matara's star fort, and roll back into Weligama.
